Why Scalp Health is Important

The scalp is often an overlooked part of our haircare routines that is actually very important. A healthy scalp means healthy hair and the scalp is the root (see what we did there) of it all!

In this edition of #HairTalk by Fallachi Hair, we talk about the common scalp issues, their causes, and how you can fix them.

Oily Scalp

One of the most common hair problems, an oily scalp is caused by overactive sebaceous glands on the scalp. It can vary from person to person and will depend on your hair type and other lifestyle factors.

A common cause is actually over washing your hair believe it or not! This is because if your hair is washed too much, you are stripping it of it’s natural oils, causing your scalp to dry out. This means that your scalp can produce even more oil to make up for what was taken away.

Try going longer in between washes if you are washing your hair too often to allow the sebum production to regulate.

Dandruff

Another very common, and often annoying scalp condition many people suffer from.

Dandruff causes the skin to flake and can cause an itchy scalp.

There are many reasons as to why you may have dandruff. Your scalp may be too oily or dry, you may not be shampooing enough or you even may have a sensitive scalp.

Dandruff however is different to just a dry scalp, as it can be caused by the scalp being too oily. The excess oil causes skin cells to build up, and then shed off.

Keep in mind that rinsing out all products from your hair is very important and what you may think is dandruff, may actually be product build up on the scalp and hair, and that’s what is flaking off.

 

Psoriasis

This is a chronic skin condition that can cause red, scaly patches of skin to appears on your scalp. It is often itchy and is usually more long lasting and persistent compared to dandruff.

It is a condition that tends to go through phases of flaring up and then calming down. It is scalier looking compared to dandruff’s flaky appearance. Unfortunately, there is no cure as such for Psoriasis, however there are ways to manage it. These include medicated shampoos and creams recommended by a doctor. Try not to itch, as this just causes it to flare up and become more irritated. General tips would be to use the current shampoo for you, as using the wrong one can cause more irritation.
